I decided not to buy a DSLR until I've done as much as I can with the camera I have. I found out I can directly adjust ISO (sensor sensitivity), white balance, and focal length. Indirectly I can play with shutter speed and aperture. There are some tricks in photography that I was not aware of. For example, using a higher zoom and larger aperture gives a more narrow depth of field..ie blurs the background or foreground. Some touch ups in a photo software program help a lot too, like adding a bit of contrast or saturation if the colors come out a little bland.
